While on remand in Canberra's jail Roberts set fire to his cell twice. Roberts fled the home on foot but was later captured. While free he robbed a service station, threatening the manager with a knife and yelling: "Give me the f***ing money, you bastard."Īfter that incident he led a police chase, at speeds of up to 122 kilometres per hour in a 50kph zone, before being followed to a house. On another occasion when he was remanded in custody by a Magistrate, he jumped out of his chair, ran down a police officer and attempted to flee the court before his escape was thwarted and he was restrained in the court air lock.īut he did manage to abscond a day or so later during another visit to the Canberra Hospital after he had been uncuffed for treatment.
